What is VO2max?
VO2max (maximal oxygen uptake) is the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during intense exercise. It is widely regarded as the single best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. VO2max is expressed in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min).
How is VO2max Calculated from the Beep Test?
The original Léger formula (1988) uses both the final running speed and the participant's age to estimate VO2max. This calculator uses a simplified age-independent approximation based on the final speed achieved. While laboratory-measured VO2max (via gas analysis on a treadmill) is the gold standard, the beep test provides a practical and well-validated field estimate.
VO2max Fitness Classifications
| VO2max (ml/kg/min) | Classification | Approx. Beep Test Level |
|---|---|---|
| 55+ | Excellent | 13+ |
| 47-54 | Good | 10-12 |
| 39-46 | Average | 7-9 |
| 31-38 | Below Average | 5-6 |
| < 31 | Poor | < 5 |
How to Improve Your VO2max
VO2max is highly trainable. Consistent aerobic training — including interval running, tempo runs, and long steady-state sessions — can improve VO2max by 15-20% over several months of structured training.
