Beep Test vs PACER Test
The Léger 20m beep test and the FITNESSGRAM PACER are both 20-metre shuttle run tests that measure aerobic fitness, but they are not identical. Here is a detailed breakdown of the differences and when to use each protocol.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Léger 20m | FITNESSGRAM PACER |
|---|---|---|
| Full Name | Léger Multi-Stage Fitness Test | Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run |
| Developer | Luc Léger (University of Montreal, 1982) | The Cooper Institute (FITNESSGRAM) |
| Distance | 20 metres | 20 metres |
| Starting Speed | 8.5 km/h | 8.0 km/h |
| Speed Increment | +0.5 km/h per level | +0.5 km/h per level |
| Total Levels | 21 | 21 |
| Level 1 Shuttles | 7 | 7 |
| Typical Use | International sports, military, police | US schools (K-12) |
| Scoring | Level.Shuttle | Laps (total shuttles) or Level.Shuttle |
| VO2max Estimation | Léger formula (speed + age) | FITNESSGRAM look-up tables |
The Key Difference: Starting Speed
The most significant difference is the starting speed. The Léger test begins at 8.5 km/h while the PACER starts at 8.0 km/h. This means the PACER is slightly easier at the beginning, which makes it more suitable for younger or less fit participants. By Level 2 onwards, the PACER is effectively one level behind the Léger test.
Shuttle Count Differences
While both tests have 21 levels, the number of shuttles per level differs slightly in the early levels. The PACER has 8 shuttles at Levels 2, 3, and 4, while the Léger test has 8 shuttles at Levels 2 and 3, then jumps to 9 at Level 4. This means the total shuttle count and distance covered at any given level differs between the two protocols.
Which Protocol Should You Use?
Use Léger 20m if:
- Testing adult athletes or sports teams
- Military, police, or fire service fitness testing
- International testing standards required
- Comparing to research using the Léger protocol
- Testing experienced or physically fit participants
Use FITNESSGRAM PACER if:
- Testing in US schools (K-12)
- FITNESSGRAM assessment requirements
- Testing children or adolescents
- Participants have lower baseline fitness
- Need a slightly gentler starting pace
Can You Convert Between the Two?
Scores are not directly interchangeable between the Léger and PACER protocols because the shuttle counts and starting speeds differ. A Level 8 on the PACER is not the same as Level 8 on the Léger test — the runner will have covered a different total distance and reached a different speed. Always note which protocol was used when recording and comparing scores.
