What is the Beep Test?

The beep test (also known as the multi-stage fitness test, shuttle run test, or pacer test) is a maximal aerobic endurance assessment. Participants run back and forth over a 20-metre distance in time with audio beeps. The time between beeps decreases each level, requiring progressively faster running speeds. It is widely used by sports teams, military organisations, police academies, and schools to measure cardiovascular fitness (VO2max).

How Does the 20m Beep Test Work?

  1. Set up two markers 20 metres apart on a flat surface.
  2. Runners line up at one end and begin running when the first beep sounds.
  3. Each runner must reach the opposite 20m line before the next beep.
  4. The speed increases each level — Level 1 starts at 8.5 km/h (Léger) or 8.0 km/h (PACER).
  5. If a runner fails to reach the line before the beep twice consecutively, they are eliminated and their score is recorded.
  6. The last completed level and shuttle number determines the runner's score and estimated VO2max.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good beep test score?

A good score depends on age and gender. For adult males, reaching Level 9-10 is considered average, Level 11-12 is good, and Level 13+ is excellent. For adult females, Level 7-8 is average, Level 9-10 is good, and Level 11+ is excellent. Elite athletes often reach Level 15+.

How is VO2max calculated from the beep test?

VO2max is estimated using the final speed achieved in the test. The original Léger formula factors in both speed and age. This online tool uses a simplified age-independent formula that provides a general estimate suitable for comparative purposes.

Can I use this beep test for a group?

Yes! Simply enter all runner names separated by commas. During the test, tap each runner's name when they drop out to record their level and shuttle. Results are ranked automatically.

Is this beep test accurate?

This tool uses the official timing intervals for both the Léger and FITNESSGRAM PACER protocols. For best results, use a measured 20-metre distance on a flat, non-slip surface. For professional testing, consider the Fitness Tests app which offers additional calibration options.
