PACER Test Script

The FITNESSGRAM PACER test uses a standardised audio recording that guides participants through the test. Below is the structure and content of the official PACER test script, along with administration guidelines for PE teachers and test administrators.

Our free online PACER test timer handles all the audio cues automatically with accurate timing. No CD or audio file needed.

PACER Test Introduction Script

The PACER audio begins with an introduction that explains the test to participants. The key elements covered in the introduction are:

Test Explanation

The introduction explains that this is a running test that gets progressively harder. Participants are told they will be running across a 20-metre distance and must reach the other side before the beep sounds.

Pacing Guidance

Participants are instructed to run in a straight line and to pace themselves. They should not start too fast. If they arrive at the line before the beep, they should wait for the beep before running back.

Elimination Rules

The introduction explains that if a participant fails to reach the line before the beep, they should try to regain the pace. If they fail to reach the line a second time, their test is over and they should step off the course.

Start Signal

After the introduction, there is a short countdown or ready signal, followed by the first beep to begin running.

Audio Cue Structure

During the test, the audio provides three types of cues:

🔊

Single Beep

Played at regular intervals within each level. Participants must reach the 20m line before each single beep. The time between beeps decreases as levels increase.

🔊🔊🔊

Triple Beep

Signals the end of one level and the start of the next. The speed increases by 0.5 km/h. Some versions also announce the level number.

🏁

End Signal

A distinct sound pattern that indicates the test is over (after Level 21 or when the administrator stops the audio).

Level-by-Level Timing

Each level lasts approximately one minute. Here is the time between beeps (shuttle time) for each level:

LevelSpeedTime Between BeepsLaps in Level
18.0 km/h9.00 sec7
28.5 km/h8.47 sec8
39.0 km/h8.00 sec8
49.5 km/h7.58 sec8
510.0 km/h7.20 sec9
610.5 km/h6.86 sec9
711.0 km/h6.55 sec10
811.5 km/h6.26 sec10

1113.0 km/h5.54 sec11

Levels 13-21 continue with the same 0.5 km/h increment. See the full PACER level chart →

Administrator Guidelines

If you are administering the PACER test for a class or group, follow these guidelines for accurate and fair testing:

  • Measure the course accurately — Use a tape measure to mark exactly 20 metres. Even small errors affect results.
  • Use a flat, non-slip surface — A gym floor is ideal. Avoid wet grass or uneven ground.
  • Ensure audio is loud enough — All participants must be able to hear the beeps clearly. Use a speaker, not a phone.
  • Assign lap counters — For large groups, pair students so one runs while the other counts laps. Or use our online tool to track everyone.
  • Warm up first — Lead students through 5-10 minutes of light jogging and dynamic stretching before the test.
  • Record total laps — FITNESSGRAM uses total laps completed (not level.shuttle). Our tool converts automatically.
  • Be consistent — Use the same surface, footwear policy, and warm-up routine each time you retest.

Common Questions About the PACER Script

Do I need the official FITNESSGRAM CD?

No. Our free online timer uses the exact same timing intervals as the official PACER protocol. It generates accurate beeps at the correct pace for each level using Web Audio, so you do not need a physical CD or audio file.

What if students cannot hear the beep?

Connect a Bluetooth speaker or portable PA system to your device. The beep must be audible from both ends of the 20-metre course. Test the volume before starting.

Can I pause the PACER test?

The official protocol does not allow pausing. However, our online tool includes a pause feature for practice runs or if there is a safety concern. For official testing, run the test without pausing.
